She is an enrolled San Carlos Apache Tribal member and has been a public health nurse in various places including San Carlos for over 49 years. Alycia de Mesa is from the Phoenix area and is of Apache descent from Chihuahua, Mexico. She is a PhD candidate in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology and an Indigenous Education Specialist for Labriola National American Indian Data Center at Arizona State University.
